Since Friday, Barth's History three classes have watched Pearl Harbor, the movie, starring Ben Affleck and Josh Harnett. The plot of the story includes two lutenuiets friends who rise to heroic status and mingle their way into a love triangle. President FDR, (Jon Voight) makes one of his fire-side chats corresponding to the sequence of events on the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Within minutes, news prints were released with the breaking story.
The relevance of this scene in the film accesses the effect news media and print have on certain issues and people. In other words, editorials or journalism in general can inform those on significant events that have occured in both the past and present. For instance, I was reading USA Today pertaining to the death of Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy. The article was directly devoted to his life as well as the lives of his prominent family. While reading I was curious to find out some mind-blowing facts about his secondary education, such as his suspension from Harvard due to violations (cheating) on a test, which I would have never known if not for the news.
